Chicago Regional Summit Seminar Review

Chicago 28th September 2015

The Global Centre on Healthy Workplaces and the Health Enhancement Research Organisation (HERO) played host to a successful global seminar in Chicago on September 28. The seminar focused on key health and productivity challenges and examples of good practices applied on a global scale.

The opening session highlighted the latest well-being and workplace health trends and featured Doug Stover from Gallup as well as Barry Hall (Buck Consultants) and Wolf Kirsten (Global Centre on Healthy Workplaces). Stephen Bevan from the Work Foundation gave an excellent account of what does (and does not) make for a healthy workplace drawing from examples within the UK. Ron Joines, Global Medical Director at GSK, provided an enlightening case study of his company’s healthy workplace programme, and it is easy to see why it won the Global Healthy Workplace Multinational Award 2015.

The seminar concluded with an interactive panel discussing the challenges of developing global metrics featuring Wayne Burton from American Express, Howard Kraft from Mercer and Zorianna Hyworon from Infotech.

For CEOs interested in the value of their share price, perhaps most attention will be on the investment community’s perspective with presentations fromDeutsche Asset & Wealth Management, and analyst Ray Fabius of HealthNext. “Good investors are always looking to find ever more sophisticated ways to understand the underlying strength of a company. Health and wellbeing are powerful indicators in assessing the businesses ability to attract, retain and motivate top performing employees. In fact there is increasing evidence that a healthy workforce provides a competitive advantage.” says Ray Fabius.

Hosting this year’s Summit, which is organised by Global Centre for Healthy Workplaces, is FIESC SESI. The FIESC president, Glauco José Côrte said; “The lack of investment and continuous and systematic actions in promoting quality of life has been responsible for the burdensome and increasing costs of absenteeism and turnover, as well as compromising productivity. Therefore, the promotion of healthy workplaces and the wellbeing of workers from any industry is the basic condition for its growth and development”.

Employee engagement, productivity and motivation follow closely behind.
Wolf Kirsten, co-director of Global Centre for Healthy Workplaces said, “This latest survey shows that stress and mental wellbeing is at the top of employer’s agenda. On a positive side, there is growing evidence that Chief Executives are taking it seriously and our Awards programme is designed to enable employers to share better practice in tackling such issues.”
