2014 Global Healthy Workplace Award Winners

Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME): Spokane Regional Health District (USA)
SRHD is a local public health agency with 250 employees who serve a population of more than 400,000 in Spokane County, Washington. The Living Well Program has a 15-year history and enjoys strong leadership support and active involvement. SRHD has developed policies, system and environmental changes that have greatly enhanced the way employees embrace safe and healthy choices.

Large Enterprises: Telefônica do Brasil (Brazil)
Telefônica was a semi-finalist last year and reapplied with a stronger program. Telefônica has developed its own self-managed health insurance plan, with broad coverage all over Brazil. One of the outcomes of the comprehensive “BEM PERTO” program is that health insurance fees are only 7.8 percent of monthly payroll, whereas the average among other Brazilian enterprises is 15 percent of payroll.

Multinational Enterprises: IBM (Global)
IBM has a long-standing tradition in creating healthy workplaces throughout the world and continues to drive an integrated approach to workplace health. IBM has established 10 global priorities for health promotion, which are applied to its many employees globally. For example, IBM uses social analytics technology to capture “Mini Pulse” feedback from employees as they interact with health programs.

*The Global Healthy Workplace Awards (GHWAwards) programme is co-hosted by i-genius (UK) and International Health Consulting (Germany/USA).

Creating a Global Awareness

The Global Summit attracted employers of all sizes, health system leaders, universities, policy leaders, NGOs, and world-renowned award judges and speakers amid a two-day packed agenda on topics ranging from addressing public health promotion in China, to mental well-being and happiness at work, to creating healthy workplaces for NGO workers.

The GHWAwards program is committed to advancing and convincing employers of the value of investing in the health of their employees. Overall, one can see a global increase in awareness and popularity of the HWP Model with national awards programmes (e.g. Brazil), certifications (e.g. Spain), professional associations (IAWHP) as well as enterprises all aligning with the model. This development is very encouraging as a comprehensive and integrated approach to healthy workplaces is gradually taking hold globally.

The 2015 Global Healthy Workplace Awards Summit will take place in Florianópolis, Brazil, on May 18-19 (co-hosted by SESI Santa Catarina) and 2016 in Thailand (co-hosted by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation). In addition, regional seminars are offered to highlight good practices within the given region and transfer learning to the country level, e.g. last year for Latin America in São Paulo, Brazil and later this year on September 29 for North America in San Diego, USA in conjunction with the HERO Forum.

IBM – 2014 Multinational Employer Winners

International Business Machines – Commit to Health
28th July 2014

IBM is a multinational technology and innovation company with over 400,000 employees across approximately 100 countries. Addressing the health needs of such a dispersed, diverse population relies on a steadfast commitment from senior leadership and a strategic, integrated approach.

The specific goal of health promotion at IBM is to reduce health risk and build vitality among employees and their families, in order to enhance well-being, enable high performance, and mitigate avoidable health-related costs. IBM has embraced the WHO’s Healthy Workplace guidelines, to help refine company health priorities and objectives.

IBM’s “Commit to Health” approach begins with long-standing corporate support with an integrated strategy which reflects a shared commitment and responsibility for health between both the company and employees. All IBMers are encouraged to commit to healthy living and vitality building, engagement with regular preventive care, and active involvement in healthcare decisions. In turn, IBM commits to helping employees succeed by making the healthiest choice the easiest choice, by putting the required resources directly in their hands. This is brought to life through IBM’s online Commit to Health Community, using its internal social connections and collaboration hub. Thousands of employees around the world visit and interact in the online community, sharing ideas and reviewing timely health education.

Employees are proactively and meaningfully involved during various steps of the program development process.

Examples include:

• Focus groups to test new program concepts, such as a new Children’s Health program to assist parents in addressing healthy behaviors at home.
• Beta testing of new tools to improve user experience, such as the testing of a new web-based tool designed to encourage Mindfulness and Resilience.
• Piloting of new programs before full implementation, such as training for HR professionals and managers on Mental Well-being Support.

Recently, IBM has leveraged innovative social analytics technology to capture “Mini Pulse” feedback from employees as they interact with health programs. This real-time, practical input is invaluable when serving such a large, dispersed population such as IBM’s.

In order to provide structure in program design and delivery, IBM established 10 Global Priorities for Health Promotion which include: Health Assessment, Active Living, Healthy Eating, Sleep & Rest, Mental & Emotional Well-being, Preventing Tobacco, Alcohol, & Drug Abuse, Injury & Violence Free Living, Infection Prevention, Clinical Prevention and Engagement Strategies. These priority areas are addressed through common global processes and systems, an integrated network of health professionals, and a combination of cross-border and local initiatives. Since the relative importance of each topic area varies around the world, particularly between major market and growth market countries, the model allows for additional flexibility and prioritization at the local level.

Specific targets across the framework are driven by IBM’s formal Well-being Management System, which provides the means for integrated planning, alignment to corporate objectives, and effective monitoring of progress. Annual improvement plans, periodic reporting, and formal audits provide the processes to enable efficiency and progress. Creating a network of cross-border support and collaboration has helped to maximize internal subject matter expertise and program efficiencies around the world.

Several key global initiatives demonstrate IBM’s continued innovation. A new Global health Risk Assessment tool has been acculturated and adapted for use in 130 countries and is available to employees in 26 languages. In the United States, typically 60% of IBM employees complete the HRA, and initial launches in the United Kingdom and India have already reached 20% and 10% respectively, through use of lotteries to win wellness-related products. IBM’s global Virtual Health Fair event represents an exciting new approach to delivering health and safety education in a 24-hour live online event featuring Integrated Health Services experts and IBMer interaction. The fair featured 12 webcasts on topics ranging from Sleep to Stress and Travel Health. Roughly 10,000 employees visited the first Virtual Health Fair, with 13,000 webcast views and 19,000 resource downloads in 8 different languages. IBM also embarked to create a new program model called, Wellness Advisor which aims to bring together EAP, medical support and Wellness coaching services to improves access and support as well as create a less stigmatized entry point for EAP services.

Specific targets are set related to integration across all 4 Pillars of Integrated Health Services (Safety, Medical, Health Benefits, and Health Promotion). Also, considerable cross-functional development has been done to integrate Health Promotion efforts into the Health Benefits design and delivery processes. Outside of the Integrated Health Services department, projects are also underway to more deeply integrate with other HR functions, such as Work/Life and Workforce Analytics. All such cross-functional integrations not only increase the impact of Health Promotion efforts, but also support sustainability.

IBM was recently recognized as one of the three best workplaces supporting employee health in the world at the Global Healthy Workplace Award Summit in Shanghai April, 2014. IBM has also contributed to industry research on workplace health promotion, publishing various peer-reviewed manuscripts on the impact of programs on healthy behaviors and business costs.

Telefonica do Brasil – 2014 Large Employer Winners

Bem Perto Programme
24th June 2014

A healthy workplace has always been one of the top priorities of the Telefônica Brasil S/A. From the fusion of the two telecommunications companies in 2011, our main challenge was to assure that we would keep the best practices both companies already had.

The Health Promotion area in Telefônica is composed of a multidisciplinary team of more than one hundred professionals from the Occupational Safety and Health field. The company has 15 day-clinics in the main cities of Brazil and provides integrated medical and nursery services for all employees at their workplace. Safety technicians and engineers perform the management of risks and the prevention of accidents and occupational disease. This department exists to integrate occupational health, labor safety and health care. It’s a system of three pillars.

The company has also developed a national self-managed health insurance as well as a program that helps manage chronic diseases and monitor health supervision.

The integrated program is named “Bem Perto”, in English “so close”, is based on the Five Keys to Healthy Workplaces, established by the WHO (World Health Organization). The Bem Perto Program was born after Telefônica incorporated Vivo. They selected the best health actions from both companies and created a new program, which has four pillars:

1. Cuidar (take care) is the pillar in which action plans focus on health promotion and illness prevention such as: day clinics, support for pregnancy, nutrition programs, vaccination programs and our EAP (Employee Assistance Professionals) in which employees receive psychological, social and legal counseling, as well as assistance with personal finance management, family planning, among other emergency issues.

Company doctors supervise hospitalized patients. This is highly appreciated by employees and brings many positive results, reducing the cost of the health insurance.

2. Proteger (protect) is the basis of the “Bem Perto” program because it involves the management of the internal occupational risks. Using the WHO methodology, our safety technicians and engineers evaluate the physical environment and then issue technical reports, in order to assure a safe and healthy workplace.

3. Acolher (shelter) is the pillar designed to support the community. It develops actions to integrate families and communities. It promotes wellness and a human approach. The tools for this are: internal and external campaigns, for example for blood donation, winter clothing donation, social SMS for health prevention and critical awareness, and others. These actions have achieved massive participation.

4. Nosso Clube (Our Club) is the pillar that promotes health, culture and leisure for the whole family. There are several sports activities and entertainment.

Sporting activities such as street racing and weekly workouts, soccer, tennis, karting, bowling, swimming, fishing, card games and squash are part of Nosso Clube (Our Club), which already has 4,200 employees’ members. In addition to sports activities, employees and their families can also take part of other activities such as coral, theater group and dance.

The company also offers over 400 partnerships across the country, with discounts and special conditions in classes, restaurants, movie theaters, health and beauty salons, fitness centers, travel packages, photo printing and many others.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy condition is not only defined by the absence of illness, it is also about social and mental wellness.

In Brazil, the management of health and safety at work has gradually advanced. A significant number of companies still focus on the compliance with legal requirements.

Telefonica Brasil S/A, however, has adopted WHO guidelines. That means that the company considers a safe and healthy workplace is not a matter of choice but a value, properly integrated into the strategic management process.

We have formal committees composed of people who represent the company and the employees. There are 25 committees nationally spread and there must be at least one committee in each of the company´s main administrative buildings. Buildings in which we have potential risks we have more than one committee. We also have a Steering Committee that reports the most sensitive issues to the company´s board.

In 2013, the company was awarded by Você S/A 150 Best Companies Guide (As 150 Melhores Empresas para Você Trabalhar) promoted by FIA (Administration Institute Foundation / Fundação Instituto de Administração), one of the most respected surveys institute in the country.

The Health Promotion area was recognized for “Best Practices in Health”, in which 94.4% of the sample endorsed our health services.

The continuous evaluation is another essential point to the program sustainability. Through the annual satisfaction employee survey we can understand how our practices are received by our employees.

In 2013, the general (ICC) was 82%, a significant result, which documents organizational wellness within a level of excellence.

The policies, procedures and instructions of the Bem Perto Program are based on the World Health Organizational model. Our main concern is about constructing a healthy and productive environment for our employees. Therefore, we strive for solid results and high performance.
